Nation states and tribes collide, band together, fight, love and splinter. Like the former union of kingdoms referred to by its name, Yugoslavian is a melting pot of Porcelain characteristics found predominantly in BC (its name refers to a Rocambole in other locales). Maybe there's something about the Yugo name that leads to questionable citizenship? But in this case, Yugoslavian is nearly synonymous (at least in BC) with great Porcelain flavor and the wonders of baked garlic.
Yugoslavian - Seed Garlic & Umbels
Cloves: Averages 4-6 large cloves per bulb.
Bulbils: Porcelains have the smallest of all bulbils, numbering in the hundreds per umbel. Select the largest 50% and plant those if you want good results. Harvest the resultant rounds at the same time as you harvest the bulbs.
Growing: Very popular cultivar in the Okanagan and central BC so it is well acclimated to this climate. Careful to keep it watered once the dry season hits. Scape removal is recommended to achieve good bulbing.
Harvest: Mid-season harvest. The wrappers are pretty sturdy on Porcelains and so the bulbs can stand waiting a bit longer before harvesting, maybe when 50 - 65% of the leaves are browning. Always dig down and inspect the bulbs to make sure they're doing well and use your own judgement.
Storage: Porcelains are a good storing garlic. Expect 8-9 months.
Pedigree: We've been growing Yugoslavian (Porcelain) since 2009 and it came to us via Heino and Manuela Peters of Roots and Greens Farm in Grindrod.
